The mountain tops are all a-glow
On the first Sunday after Corpus Christi, bonfires are lit on the mountain ridges of South Tyrol. This tradition can be traced back to the time of the Tyrolean struggle for freedom around the year 1796. It was then that the Tyrolese swore eternal loyalty to the Heart of Jesus Christ and prayed for help against Napoleon’s troops. That’s why many of these bonfires are heart-shaped. But other Christian symbols, such as the Cross, are often seen.
